I'll start off by saying the the production behind the show and games itself were to- tier. Genuinely one of the best shows by Riot and I've been to 3 other LCS finals, a Rift Rivals, and Worlds in 2016. Crowd was electric, casters were on point and the people running the show in between games did an incredible job keeping everyone involved and entertained.
Now for everything around the show.
The pre-game left a lot to be desired. Saturday was shaping up to be a catastrophe. We were encouraged to go to Fan Fest and required to bring our tickets. There was minimal to no information on where to go to retrieve our tickets (no signs or anything) and when we asked the United Center employees we were given conflicting information. This seemed to be a theme for the weekend when it came to communication between Riot and United Center. On Saturday and there was only one food truck, no water as it had been sold out and it was scorching hot. Many people were suffering from heat exhaustion while we were waiting in line for the various activities in Fan Fest. Once we realized that there wasn't a whole lot going on at Fan Fest we started to make our way to the entrance. Again, no signs on where we needed to go or how to get to our seats. We were redirected to multiple entrances as United Center staff also seemed to not know where we would enter. Once we were actually let get in (about 10 minutes after we were supposed to at 1:30 CT - this issue happened on both days) it was a frenzy on what side we needed to go to. I had purchased the general admission seats that allowed us to go to one of two sections depending on the team we were rooting for. We were informed per Riot's site to ask the ushers which section was for which team, but most did not know what we were talking about and they also didn't know that there were general admission seats for Sundays games as well. Seating was also an issue as most people were unsure whether the section was actually general admission or not since the tickets had actual seat numbers and rows, and this led to a dispute between some of the guests on Sunday that lead one of the United Center employees getting involved as they were unsure if the section was general admission or not for Sundays games. They then stated that if someone comes with the seat number that someone is in, they would be asked to move (despite again it being general admission). I had bought a 2-day event pass with the same information on both, why would Saturday be GA and not Sunday? Then it came time to leave the event but we were unable to leave through any of the exits so we were all funneled out through one exit which was very time consuming and confusing as we weren't sure where to go following the 20K+ people all trying to leave to their various ways home.
It was a very messy event that hopefully gets ironed out for the next one. I would say most of the issues seemed to stem from a lack of clear communication between parties. We could ask 5 different people on where to go to for something and would somehow get 8 different answers. It was definitely frustrating to go through at times but in the end when it came to the show itself and a reason to visit Chicago I would say it was still a good time.
